T_SOURCE 0 ABSTRACT This Directive concerns the drawing up of programmes in order to achieve the following objectives: - reduction of the heavy-metal content of batteries and accumulators, - promotion of marketing of batteries and accumulators containing smaller quantities of dangerous substances and/or less polluting substances, - gradual reduction, in household waste, of spent batteries and accumulators covered by Annex I, - promotion of research aimed at reducing the dangerous-substance content and favouring the use of less polluting substitute substances in batteries and accumulators, and research into methods of recycling, - separate disposal of spent batteries and accumulators covered by Annex I (1. Batteries and accumulators put on the market as from 01/01/1999,containing more than 0,0005% of mercury by weight. 2. Batteries and accumulators put on the market as from 18/09/1992 and containing - more than 25 mg mercury per cell, except alkaline manganese batteries, - more than 0,025 % cadmium by weight, - more than 0,4 % lead by weight. 3. Alkaline manganese batteries containing more than 0,025 % mercury by weight placed on the market as from 18/09/92). Directive 91/157/EEC and other documents above are repealed from 26 September 2008 when new Batteries Directive 2006/66/EC entered into force. ======= Repealed by Directive 2006/66/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 6 September 2006 on batteries and accumulators and waste batteries and accumulators and repealing Directive 91/157/EEC, with effect from 26 September 2008.
