Reporting obligation for: River quality (EWN-1)

Title River quality (EWN-1)
Description NOTE (2015-07-31): This reporting obligation has been discontinued. Information on water quality in rivers (including biological data) is now collected via WISE SoE Water Quality (WISE-4).

Data on rivers are collected through the WISE-SoE data collection process. WISE SoE was previously known as EUROWATERNET (EWN) and EIONET-Water. Biological quality elements in rivers are integrated into reporting of Rivers water quality starting from 2012 reporting period.

The data requested on rivers includes the physical characteristics of the river monitoring stations, proxy pressures on the upstream catchment areas, as well as chemical quality data on nutrients and organic matter, and hazardous substances in rivers. It also includes the biological data (primarily calculated as national Ecological Quality Ratios), as well as information on the national classification systems for each Biological Quality Element and waterbody type.
This reporting obligation is an Eionet core data flow

Extra information A formal request is sent to NFPs and NRCs every year with reference to templates to use and guidelines. The guidelines are being updated every year. Since 2012 the request has also been sent to Ecostat network and national contact points who provided biological test data in 2009 - 2012 (available at Letter on WISE SoE data request 2013 is available at

The general content of reporting as agreed by Water Directors is described in the guidance document "Reporting required for assessing the state of, and trends in, the water environment at the European level" (February 2009), which includes reporting sheets for several EEA SoE data flows, available at
In addition, updated and new SoE reporting sheets for biology in rivers and lakes (July 2010) are also available on the NRC EIONET Freshwater interest group library (subfolder SOE- reporting guidance Eionet/WFD CIS) at
