Directive 98/81/EC modifies Council Directive 90/219/EEC of 23 April 1990 on the contained use of genetically modified micro-organisms. The objective of Directive 98/81/EC is to lay down common measures for the contained use of genetically modified micro-organisms for the purposes of protecting human health and the environment.
Repealed by Directive 2009/41/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 6 May 2009 on the contained use of genetically modified micro-organisms (Recast), with effect from 10 June 2009.
