|Title||Biological data in transitional and coastal waters (WISE-2)|
Data on biology in surface waters are collected annually through the WISE-SoE data collection process. Following two test data requests in 2009 and 2010, biological data are requested as regular data flow from 2011 onwards.
Reporting category "Biological quality elements in Rivers and Lakes" is integrated into reporting of Rivers/Lakes water quality starting from 2012 reporting period. Biology in Transitional and Coastal Waters was not integrated into reporting of Transitional, Coastal and Marine Waters in 2012, because many changes due to 2nd WFD intercalibration exercise are expected.
The data requested on biology in transitional and coastal waters includes the physical characteristics of the transitional and coastal monitoring stations, biology in transitional and coastal waters - aggregated data, boundaries of ecological status classes in transitional and coastal waters, and waterbody biology in transitional and coastal waters.
This reporting obligation is an Eionet core data flow

|Reporting guidelines||Guidelines and templates available through the Reportnet Data Dictionary [Valid since 04/07/2014]|
The guidelines are being updated every year before a formal request is sent to NFPs, NRCs, Ecostat network and national contact points who provided biological test data, with reference to templates to use and guidelines. Letter on WISE SoE data request 2014 is available at http://icm.eionet.europa.eu/announcements/wise_soe...
The general content of reporting as agreed by Water Directors is described in the guidance document "Reporting required for assessing the state of, and trends in, the water environment at the European level" (February 2009), which includes reporting sheets for several EEA SoE data flows, available at http://forum.eionet.europa.eu/nrc-eionet-freshwate...
In addition, updated and new SoE reporting sheets for biology in rivers and lakes (July 2010) and for biology in transitional and coastal waters (June 2010) are also available on the NRC EIONET Freshwater interest group library (subfolder SOE- reporting guidance Eionet/WFD CIS) at http://forum.eionet.europa.eu/nrc-eionet-freshwate...
On 4th June 2009, a test request was sent to NRCs for Rivers and Lakes and NRCs for Marine and Coastal Environment, and Freshwater and transitional and coastal water experts that have indicated they are willing to participate in the test reporting. The letter, templates, reporting sheet, etc. are put on the NRC EIONET Freshwater interest group library (subfolder Biological test reporting 2009) at http://forum.eionet.europa.eu/nrc-eionet-freshwate...
The second test data request ran from 1 August until 31 October 2010 in combination with the WISE SoE data request 2010. For this purpose, two Data Dictionaries for biology in rivers and lakes, and for biology in transitional and coastal waters were developed.
